Needleworker's Guild

4/6/2012

Reminder:

The next meeting of the Barony of Loch Salann Needleworkers Guild meeting is Tuesday April 10 at 7:00 pm.

At the last meeting, I provided handouts on couching... attendance was very light... if you are interested in this technique and would like a copy of the handout, let me know Copies are also still available here if you are coming to the meeting next week.

CHALLENGE: I hear that Hold Tyte will be sponsoring an A & S display at Melee Madness in June - this is a good time to showcase your talents (no pressure to compete).. I challenge the guild to display at least one item of embroiderey (completed or not) at this event. I believe documentation would not be required, but please plan to bring or fill in an index card that describes your item: include: item name - embroidery technique(s) used, time period, pattern source, what the item is and how it will be (was) used? There might just be a little 'something' in it for those of you who participate.

BLSNG Report for Feb 7, 2012

Meeting attendance is back up, 6 members present. no classes, just a lot of stitching going on!

Anna brought her recently finished pieces so that we could get pictures for our blog page, she'll be sending the details soon and then it will be posted. She is currently working on the Coronation Garb for Princess Nisa... the gown is black linen, she's outlining a very large griffon using gold cotton thread. The thread she's using is a crochet cotton which produces a thicker stitch that really stands out well. The hem of the gown will contain a row of tudor roses. She will be working on Prince Sean's coronation garb when done with this one.

Jerilyn is working on her cross stitch biscornu, it's a really pretty lavender flower pattern, looks like she's getting really close to having it done.

Baroness Jennette has been knitting up a storm for assorted people so hasn't had a lot of time for embroidery. She's putting the finishing touches on her cross stitch biscornu and is also working on a blackwork sampler. She's hoping to be able to do a pair of blackwork cuffs in the fairly near future.

Anna's Spring GardenLeigh-Ann is cross stitching a griffon she found in the Here be Drolleries book, it's a 15th Century Italian pattern - cotton floss on Aida. It's coming along quite nicely. Her tea cup project has been set aside for the time being.

Rachel is still working on her cross stitch which is a large and very intricate 'Southern Belle', non period pattern but is going to be awsome when it's finished. She also brought a finished cross stitch project to show us... Cross stitch turtle with her name in different letter styles, she'll be using part of this piece for a name tag. The turtle is really cute and the entire piece is very nicely done.

My two biscornu are assembled and just need to have the button applied (I'll be using beads instead of a button to avoid distracting from the embroidery). I am getting ready to start a new cross stitch pattern that is just for fun. It's the same zoomorphic pattern that is on the cover of our project books. It will be done on 22 count Aida using cotton thread, might incorporate it into a bag when I'm done.

We saw the outcome of using conversion software to build cross stitch patterns from pictures. Tool used for the conversion is 'Pattern Maker'. Anna also recommends 'PC Stitch' because it allows you to also create your own patterns. Both can be found online via a variety of craft stores or software vendors. If you have your own artwork that you would like to convert to a cross stitch pattern, bring it over and we'll convert it for you and either print it, or save it to your own flash drive.

During the meeting, I also handed out copies of instructions I found online for long arm cross stitch. similar to the cross stitch style that so many of us enjoy doing, but the outcome adds a very lovely 'texture' to the piece.

Next meeting will be on Thursday February 23rd.

Happy stitching

BLSNG Report for Jan 26, 2012

The guild meeting today was lighly attended but still productive. Jerilyn taught us how to assemble a biscornu - technique was interesting to say the least, and it works very well.

Brownyn is just starting a new project, it's an Asissi style piece (voided) technique is long armed cross stitch (rougly 12th century) using a pattern from the 15th or 16th century.

Jerilyn has been busy at work so hasn't had much time to stitch, she is still working on her cross stitch biscornu.

I just finished the 2 biscornu pieces that I was working on, so the class timing is perfect, I will be putting these together after I practice with the technique that we learned. I also completed the main stitching on one of the cup covers for largesse project. This piece is a circular celtic knotwork design done in satin stitch on a linen ground with cotton thread - blue. Edges will be 'smoothed' with stem or some other outlining stitch.

I also finally got a bit more organized and created books where guild members can keep track of their projects, patterns and whatever else they need to keep track of.

Bronwyn's BookmarkBLSNG Report for Jan 10, 2012

The BLSNG (Barony of Loch Salann Needleworkers Guild) group is still going strong. We met on Tuesday Jan 10th at Bethoc's home. There were 8 people in attendance, 6 regular attendees and 2 newcomers.

One of the newcomers is new to embroidery, so she was given a starter kit including hoop, needle, scissors and thread. The other is working on an existing embroidery project but didn't have a hoop so she was given one as well. Her project is a lovely zoomorphic pattern being stitched directly onto a gown. She is filling in the design with chain stitch and her project is progressing nicely.

Aurora continues to work on the edging for her scarf. She is nearing completion on one edge and it's very pretty. Can't remember what techinque she is using, I believe it's a Portuguese pattern which corresponds with her personna.

Brownyn is nearing completion on an Assissi pattern in gold thread that is very nicely done. Stitch technique is cross stitch on linen. It is almost done. Very tidy back which always makes me smile.

Jennet has finished the top of her cross stitch biscornu. She was also interested in learning blackwork so once again I did an impromptu beginners blackwork class. Joining us in this class were the two new attendees. All were sent home with a packet of blackwork patterns that are both beginning and intermediate levels as well as practice materials as needed. Looking forward to seeing what they produce.

Jerilyn is working on a cup cover, the design is the Lewis Chessmen king and queen pattern from 'Celtic Cross Stitch' pattern book, technique is cross stitch.

Leigh-Ann is starting a new cross stitch project from a kit - antique tea cups. It's fairly large, I look forward to seeing it completed.

I'm working on two biscournu, one is monochromatic cross stitch using Vinciollo pattern from an online resource Anna pointed us to. The top is finished. Bottom is yet to be started. The other is a blackwork pattern done in red, resource was 'Largartera Embroidery' published by the Embroiderer's Guild of South Australia, top is finished, working on the bottom.

Jennet showed everyone her latest creation, a set of knitted fingerless gloves in blue wool (probably alpaca,), very soft to the touch. Aurora let everyone browse through several books that she brought, and everyone got to see the 9 new Chatelaine patterns that I bought as well and a couple of new embroidery books. I distributed a set of 14 celtic knotwork and zoomorphic patterns that are sized for cup covers. Source for the patterns was Dover clipart 'Celtic Designs for Artists and Craftspeople'. It is my hope that everyone will pick a pattern and stitch it up for largesse. The patterns are suitable for a wide variety of stitch techniques, including but not limited to blackwork, chain stitch, satin stitch, couching, and many others. We discussed the possibility of producing items to sell as fundraiser to generate funds for future largesse projects. Everyone present seemed to agree that was a good idea. At this time everyone is producing items from personal stash and/or acquisitions. When and if we gather materials enough to initiate a fundraiser, we will nominate a treasurer who at that point in time who will work with the baronial exchequer to ensure all required reporting needs are met. At that time, these funds would only go toward purchasing materials for largesse type projects only. All personal projects do and will continue to come from everyone's personal funds. Our intent as a guild is to be self sustainable.
